You Don't Have to Wait for a Crisis to Ask for Help
It’s hard to keep driving a car when your tank is on empty, but we as a society do this all the time when it comes to our mental health. We have nothing left; we’re burned out, running on fumes for days or weeks until we finally break down. And sometimes, the cost of the repairs is far greater than the cost of regular maintenance.
We wouldn’t expect our cars to keep running without gas, oil changes, tire rotations, or routine maintenance. And yet, the list of things we do to care for our mental health is often much shorter. You don't have to wait until you're running on empty—or in crisis—to ask for help.
September is also Suicide Prevention Month, a time to remind ourselves that connection and early support matter. Checking in with yourself, talking to someone you trust, or reaching out to a mental health professional can be an important step toward getting the support you need. You don't have to wait until things feel unbearable to start the conversation.
Therapy isn't only for when something is falling apart. Sometimes the best time to ask for help is when you notice you're struggling, feeling overwhelmed, or simply not feeling like yourself. Mental health counseling can help you develop coping strategies, better understand yourself, improve communication, and build resilience. Speech therapy can provide personalized tools and strategies to strengthen communication and build confidence. The goal is to build your toolkit before you're in a crisis, so that when hard times come, as they inevitably do, you have tools to help you move through them.
And just like your car, sometimes a little maintenance can go a long way. You deserve to take care of yourself before the tank is empty.
